The UK has introduced legislation to boost the security for internet-connected devices in a bid to address the escalating risks posed by the ubiquity of smart gadgets in homes. The new law, dubbed the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) regime, imposes mandatory requirements on manufacturers, such as robust password practices, clear vulnerability reporting procedures, and transparency regarding software support duration. Failure to comply can result in fines, a departure from the previously voluntary security guidelines. Hailed as a world-first by the UK government, this law aims to safeguard consumers and businesses while fortifying the nation’s cybersecurity resilience against hackers. The EU agreed to introduce similar legislation last January called the Cyber Resilience Act. It was approved by the European Parliament last month, but it will have to be formally adopted by the European Council before it becomes law.
