Celebrating National Engineering Day 2024!
Today, we honour those engineering role models who have left an indelible mark on society and continue to inspire future generations. This year’s spotlight is on the innovative, creative, and resilient professionals who make significant contributions to our industry. Notably, we’re recognising the essential roles played by women, LGBTQ+ engineers, and those from minority and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
On this special day, statues celebrating distinguished engineers will be unveiled, offering a moment of reflection and pride for the public and the engineering community. These installations will not only highlight individual achievements but also the vital role engineering plays in addressing global challenges such as climate change and inequality. Many of us draw inspiration from role models, whether they are family members, teachers, or notable figures in the field.
Stories of inspiration abound, like Agnieszka Jezierska, whose passion was ignited by her land surveyor mother. Lynsey Seal was inspired by her father, with childhood Saturdays spent observing engineering feats firsthand. Oyeniyi Ibidapo-Obe reflects on his early fascination with his father’s problem-solving prowess, while Paula Louise Pritchard was captivated by the 1990s TV series ‘Bugs’. These narratives showcase the diverse paths that can lead to a fulfilling engineering career.
Let’s take this opportunity to not only celebrate but also inspire the next wave of engineering talent. Share your own role models and stories in the comments below! ️
