The UK Strategic Defence Review (SDR), published 2 June 2025, sets out a bold, long-term vision to respond to an increasingly dangerous global security landscape. With war in Europe, heightened Russian aggression, daily cyber threats, and rapid advances in military technology, the UK must now prepare for a new era of modern warfare.

The SDR marks a decisive shift toward warfighting readiness, ensuring the UK is secure at home and strong abroad. It establishes a “NATO first” policy and strengthens Britain’s leadership in European security and global defence innovation.

Key Pillars of the SDR:

Warfighting Readiness – Creating a more lethal, integrated Armed Forces, capable of rapid response and homeland defence.
Technology & Innovation – Accelerating adoption of AI, drones, and digital warfare, with procurement cycles measured in months, not years.
Defence as an Economic Driver – Partnering with UK industry to deliver growth, jobs, and regional prosperity through reform and investment.
NATO Leadership – Leading within NATO with enhanced nuclear, cyber, and conventional capabilities to reinforce Euro-Atlantic security.
Whole-of-Society Defence – Strengthening national resilience and deepening the bond between society and the Armed Forces.

The SDR commits to increasing defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with a future target of 3%, to rebuild capability, deter adversaries, and enable rapid innovation.

This is a blueprint for modern defence: blending conventional firepower with cutting-edge technology, fostering industry collaboration, and engaging the entire nation in keeping the UK safe.
