At some point, most of us struggle with confidence or impostor syndrome, resulting in decision paralysis or poor choices. In an excerpt from his book The Confidence Map, author Peter Atwater urges us to rethink our idea of confidence and to explore its role in the choices we make. Real confidence, says Atwater, is different from “high self-esteem and extraordinary accomplishment, and separate from how we appear to be successful”. Instead confidence is intertwined with certainty and control, and the loss of either leads to feelings of vulnerability and powerlessness. By grasping how certainty and control drive us, we can “predict trends, generate better outcomes, know when to trust our natural instincts and make better sense of the world”, the author says.
