University degrees are increasingly losing the automatic advantage they once offered, as the growing number of graduates has diluted the job security and social mobility traditionally associated with higher education.

Shitij Kapur, President of King’s College London, suggests that global competition among graduates and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence have transformed degrees from a guaranteed “passport to social mobility” into more of a “visa” — providing opportunity, but no certainty of success.

As university education becomes more widely accessible, Kapur notes that the choice of institution and course will play an ever more significant role in shaping career outcomes.
